Prevention & Wellness

At Swanson Dental Associates, we approach dentistry with an emphasis on overall wellness, long-term prevention, and a conservative approach to treatments.
Located inside the Overlake Hospital Campus, we have eight treatment rooms, two dentists, and three to four hygienists on staff each day. This means that we are able to serve your entire family, often with same-time appointments. As you come back to see us each time for your routine appointments, you’ll notice that you are receiving reliable, gentle care from the same friendly faces. Thirty years, twenty years, seventeen years, fifteen years! That is the length of time that some of our current hygiene and office team members have been with us.
Regular cleanings, thorough exams, and X-rays are important in maintaining your oral health as well as detecting potential problems before they have a chance to develop into something major. During your appointment, we will share with you X-rays and photographs of your teeth on a large monitor inside the treatment room. One of our top priorities is ensuring that we provide you with a good base of knowledge and understanding about your own oral and overall health as well as your treatment options. That way, you will be able to make confident, informed healthcare decisions for yourself and for your family.
We often use composite fillings to restore the function and integrity of missing tooth structure resulting from tooth decay, disease, or trauma. Sometimes you can detect that you have a cavity inside your mouth because of the pain you’re experiencing. Other times, we can identify early cavities and small pits in your teeth through exams and X-rays, and we can fill them in before deeper layers of your teeth are affected.
When a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can enter the pulp tissue and germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. When this is left untreated, an abscess may form, and disease can spread into your nerves and bone structure. A root canal treatment can often save your tooth so that it doesn’t have to be removed. During the procedure, the affected tissue is removed, the root canal is carefully cleaned, and then the space is filled and sealed. We perform some root canals here in our office. For more extensive cases, we will refer you to a trusted local endodontist who specializes in complex cases involving the nerves of the teeth.
If you are experiencing jaw pain, we will also examine you for signs of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) – often referred to by patients as simply “TMJ.” The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge on each side of your jaw, connecting your jawbone to your skull. TMD can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement. We provide certain types of TMJ treatments here at our office, and we can also refer you to specialists who treat this condition.
We offer custom night guards that can alleviate the pain associated with TMD. Night guards help keep your jaw in the correct position and prevent you from grinding and clenching your teeth while you sleep. We also offer custom sports guards to protect your teeth from injury and trauma.
If you are in need of wisdom teeth removal and it involves soft tissue impaction, we can take care of that here in our office. If your case is more complex and involves bone structure, we will give you a trusted referral to an oral surgeon. Rest assured that any referral we ever give you comes with the highest recommendation. These are the specialists that we see ourselves and that we send our family members to see.
In additional to these preventative and general treatments, we also offer Reconstructive Services and Cosmetic Services. Please call our office today to learn more about our services or to schedule your appointment.

We partnered with Illumitrac to launch an in-office loyalty plan to help manage the cost of dental care for the uninsured patient. Please ask for details or visit our Illumitrac Loyalty Program page.

Often referred to as “invisible braces," Invisalign is a great alternative to traditional wire braces. Using clear aligners, Invisalign can straighten crowded, crooked, or gapped teeth, and it does so typically faster than traditional braces at a similar or lesser cost. We offer Invisalign here at our office.
Schedule an appointment with us to find out if this treatment would be a good option for you. For patients in need of more extensive orthodontic work, we can refer you to a trusted orthodontist.

Over 60 years ago, the original founder of Swanson Dental Associates, Dr. Richard D. Swanson, graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry, where he later also served on the faculty. His son, Dr. Kris Swanson, followed in his father’s footsteps, graduating from the same program in 1983. Associate Dr. Brian Mills is a third generation Washington Husky and also a proud graduate of the University Washington School of Dentistry.
UW’s dental program has long been recognized as one of the strongest programs in the world. As of 2019, the University of Washington School of Dentistry was ranked No. 2 in the world among dental schools in the new Academic Ranking of World Universities by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
Go Huskies! (But don’t worry, we also love seeing patients who are WSU Cougars or other Husky rivals).

We are accredited through the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. AACD's Accreditation Program was formed in 1985 and began offering postgraduate certification in the field in 1986. AACD Accreditation has grown into the preeminent cosmetic dentistry testing standard within dentistry, including written exams and submission of actual case-work in specific cosmetic dentistry disciplines.
Seeing an AACD accredited dentist helps to ensure that you are receiving care from a dentist with advanced knowledge, skills, and expertise in cosmetic dentistry.

Each year, Seattle Met Magazine assembles a list of the best dental practitioners in the Seattle metropolitan area. Dr. Swanson has been voted “Best DDS” every year since the award’s inception in 2007. In 2020, both Dr. Swanson and Dr. Mills were awarded this honor. When you come to our office, you are seeing not just one but two of the top dentists in the Puget Sound area.
